History
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana has ancient origins, dating back to Roman times when it was an important settlement along the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. The town's name is derived from the "new castle" (Castelnuovo) built here during the Middle Ages.

The area was historically under the rule of various noble families, including the Este and the Medici. During the medieval period, the town developed as a fortified center, and its strategic location made it a significant military outpost. Today, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana's historical center retains its medieval character, with well-preserved walls, towers, and charming cobblestone streets.
