The ferry ports of Sicily are a vital cog in the island region's transport system. Not only do they connect Sicily with the Italian mainland, but they are in most cases the most effective means of transport for reaching the numerous Sicilian Islands.
Palermo is the capital of Sicily and its port is one of the busiest on the island, ferrying passengers to destinations such as Genoa, Naples, Civitavecchia and Salerno on the mainland, as well as to Cagliari in Sardinia. From the port of Messina at the north-eastern tip of Sicily it's possible to sail to a similar list of destinations but also to the Aeolian Islands and the short hop across to Calabria. |
