The castle of Fort Bard is situated a distance of 47 kilometres south-east of Aosta, the regional capital of Valle d'Aosta. The fortress was built between 1830 and 1838.

Fort Bard, also known as Forte di Bard, is a historic fortress located in the region of Valle d'Aosta, Italy. Situated in the narrow gorge of the Dora Baltea River, Fort Bard has played a crucial role in the region's history and is now a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its impressive architecture, rich heritage, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
History
The history of Fort Bard dates back to Roman times when a watchtower was built on the site to guard the strategic route through the Alps. However, the current fortress was built in the early 19th century by the House of Savoy during the reign of King Charles Albert.

​The fortress was designed to control the access to the Aosta Valley and served as a key defense point on the road connecting Italy with France through the Great St. Bernard Pass.

Throughout history, Fort Bard saw several military conflicts and sieges, including during the Napoleonic era. It was famously captured by French troops in 1800, and it wasn't until the defeat of Napoleon that the fortress returned to the control of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
