Located on the border of Italy and Slovenia, Gorizia is the capital of the UTI Collio - Alto Isonzo with a population of 34,366.
Standing at an elevation of 84 metres above sea level, it covers a total area of 41 km² and lies 45 kilometres north west of Trieste, the regional capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The main sights in Gorizia are its castle (Castello di Gorizia) which looks down on the city from the hill above while other places of interest include the Palazzo Attems Petzenstein art gallery. |
The centre of the city is the expansive Piazza della Vittoria where you'll find a good selection of places to eat, drink and shop. This is also the home of another of the city's iconic sights: the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio.
