By far the best-known internationally of the hill towns of Puglia is Ostuni. Situated in the Brindisi Province at the edge of the Salento coastal region, Ostuni is better known by its epithet La Città Bianca, the "White City" which dominates the local landscape.
Two more of Puglia's hill towns are places of pilgrimage and worship. Monte Sant'Angelo on the Gargano Peninsula offers a very different environment to the sunny seaside locations just a few miles away. It's full of historic monuments including a castle and at a height of 796 metres above sea level it's usually a good deal colder as well! |
Monte Sant'Angelo forms part of the Longobards in Italy: Places of the Power (568-774 AD) UNESCO World Heritage Site with its sanctuary of San Michele. Another site in Puglia of great religious importance owes its fame to a more recent period.
Situated on the same Gargano Peninsula as Monte Sant'Angelo, the town of San Giovanni Rotondo was the birthplace of Padre Pio who officially became a saint in 1999. In his honour is one of Italy's most beautiful modern buildings: the Sanctuary of Padre Pio designed by famous Italian architect Renzo Piano.
