Mombaldone is a small village in the province of Asti, set in the Bormida Valley close to the Ligurian border. It is the only settlement in the province included in the I Borghi più belli d’Italia association, recognised for its well-preserved medieval layout. The village is enclosed by defensive walls, with an entrance gate leading into narrow stone-paved lanes and houses clustered on the hillside.
Above the historic centre stand the remains of the Mombaldone Castle, which once controlled this strategic valley route. The parish Church of San Nicola and other smaller chapels add to the architectural heritage. Surrounded by woodland and cultivated hillsides, Mombaldone lies on the road linking Acqui Terme with the upper valleys, making it a quiet yet well-positioned stop between Piedmont and Liguria.

- Medieval Historic Centre is enclosed by ancient walls and features cobbled lanes, stone archways, and preserved medieval houses. The village is the only one in Asti province still surrounded by its original defensive walls. It can be explored easily on foot, with signposted information panels and panoramic viewpoints throughout.
- Porta di Mombaldone is the original arched gateway into the historic village, constructed in stone and still used as the main entrance. It leads directly into the oldest part of the town and has remained largely unchanged since the Middle Ages. The gate is often photographed alongside the nearby tower and surrounding houses.
- Church of San Nicola stands within the old village and dates back to the 12th century, with Romanesque foundations and later Baroque alterations. Inside are religious artworks, a carved pulpit, and a vaulted ceiling decorated with frescoes. The church is still active and sits near the village’s main square.
- Torre Civica (Civic Tower) rises above the old village and forms part of the original defensive structure. Though not open to the public, it remains an iconic landmark and can be viewed from many parts of the surrounding countryside. It is especially striking when seen from the approach road to the village.
- Walking Trails through the Bormida Valley begin at the base of the village and pass through farmland, vineyards, and wooded hills. The area is part of the UNESCO-listed landscape of southern Piedmont and offers quiet, scenic routes for walking and cycling. Trails are best explored in spring and early autumn.
