The two provinces of Trentino Alto Adige South Tyrol combine to form the overall name of the region itself. Of the 20 regions of Italy, all but two are sub-divided into a series of provinces which generally take the name of the largest city or town in that area.
In Trentino Alto Adige South Tyrol where there are just two provinces, the distinction is clear and easy to make. The southern half of the region is Trento Province which is home to the regional capital of Trento. The northern half of the region where German is more commonly spoken than Italian is Bolzano Province whose capital city is Bolzano. |
