The archaeological sites of Sardinia are a gateway to the island's past and provide a tangible footprint of its fascinating tale.
There's really no better place to start the journey of exploration than Sardinia's most famous archaeological site: Su Nuraxi di Barumini. The unusual name comes from one of the Sardinian dialects as simply means "The Nuraghe of Barumini". Nuraghe are stone houses that date back as far as 1,900 BC and there are dozens of them to visit all across Sardinia. Su Nuraxi is the largest and best preserved site and recognised by UNESCO. |
Away from the Nuraghe there are traces of a number of different civilisations who've left their footprint on Sardinia: Nora for example passed through the hands of the indigenous Sardinian people before any of the Greeks, Romans or Carthaginians arrived.
Elsewhere on the island we find the ruins of another ancient city: Tharros, which sits on a small peninsula in one of the most dramatic natural landscapes Sardinia has to offer. It's also possible to visit ancient burial sites, temples and sacred mountains on the island.
