The nuraghe of Sardinia play their part in ensuring the island region has a quite unique landscape. The word Nuraghe is the plural term used to describe the stone edifices which date back as much as 3,500 years to the age of the Nuragic Civilisation.
Traces of around seven thousand nuraghe have been found all across Sardinia, a selection oh which remain almost entirely intact. The grandest nuraghe of them all is Su Nuraxi du Barumini which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many others that it's also possible to visit such as the Nuraghe Santu Antine. |
Most of the nuraghe that you can visit are well maintained and you're really able to move all around them and see exactly how the people used to live. It's one of the most extraordinary feelings: looking out of a window on to the fields of Sardinia, enjoying exactly the same view as someone did more than 3 millennia before you. One can only wonder what kind of lives the people had at the time, the things they thought about and were scared of, with their very survival almost constantly threatened.
Any trip to Sardinia should include a visit to at least one of the Nuraghe sites; of all the archaeological sites in Italy that allow visitors, these are among the oldest and most interesting.
