The lakeside town of Bolsena is situated in the Province of Viterbo, on the shores of Lake Bolsena. It has a population of around 4,000 residents and is located a distance of 129 kilometres north-west of Rome, the regional capital of Lazio.
The main town of the eponymous lake, its most famous sight is the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara fortress. |

Overview
From the town's main square, Piazza Matteotti it's a pleasant walk of half a kilometre along a tree-lined street to the lake's shore. Whilst the lake is certainly the town's main attraction, it does have an interesting historic centre with some fascinating medieval streets.
Exploring those streets will eventually bring you to the castle from which you can get some wonderful views down onto the lake, and also have a mooch around the little museum inside.
Bolsena lies at the north-eastern corner of the lake and there are numerous places to visit in the local area. Heading west you can take a leisurely drive around the lake in an anti-clockwise direction; a little way inland is the historic town of Grotte di Castro while on the lake's shores, diagonally-opposite Bolsena are the pretty towns of Marta and Capodimonte.

- Basilica di Santa Cristina: This Romanesque-Gothic church is a significant religious site, known for the Miracle of Bolsena, which played a key role in the establishment of the Corpus Domini feast. Beneath the church, visitors can explore the catacombs and the Chapel of the Miracle, which contains a 13th-century altar linked to the event.
- Boat Trips on Lake Bolsena: From the lakeside, visitors can join boat excursions to explore the lake and its two islands, Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana. While the islands are not always open to the public, boat tours provide views of their wooded shores and historical ruins, and often include swimming stops in the open water.
- Day Trip to Cività di Bagnoregio: About 30 minutes from Bolsena, Cività di Bagnoregio is a striking hilltop village accessible only by footbridge. The lake occupies an area at the north-western tip of Lazio where the region meets Tuscany to the north west and Umbria to the north east. Within the confines of Umbria north west of the lake is the beautiful hill town of Orvieto while directly south of there is the enchanting Cività di Bagnoregio.

Bolsena Travel
By Rail: Bolsena does not have its own railway station. The nearest station is in Orvieto, approximately 22 km to the east. From Rome's Termini station, trains to Orvieto run approximately every two hours, with a journey time of about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
From Orvieto, buses connect to Bolsena; however, services are limited, with only a couple per day and none on Sundays. Alternatively, the town of Montefiascone, about 15 km south of Bolsena, has a railway station with connections to Rome, but onward transport to Bolsena may require a taxi due to limited bus services.
By Road: Bolsena is approximately 120 km north of Rome. Driving from Rome takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes via the A1 motorway, exiting at Orvieto and following signs for Bolsena. From Florence, the journey is about 150 km, taking approximately 2 hours via the A1 motorway, exiting at Orvieto and proceeding as above. Local roads connect Bolsena to nearby towns such as Montefiascone and Viterbo.
