The city of Carrara is the second city of the Province of Massa & Carrara with a population of 62,285 inhabitants. Standing at an elevation of 100 metres above sea level, it lies 120 kilometres north west of Florence, the regional capital of Tuscany.

Mention Carrara to any Italian and they'll tell you that the city is the most famous centre of marble production in the country.

History
The history of Carrara dates back to ancient times when it was inhabited by the Ligurian people. The town's marble quarries have been in operation since Roman times, and Carrara marble has been used for various iconic sculptures and buildings throughout history, including Michelangelo's famous David.

The town's marble industry flourished during the Renaissance period under the patronage of the Medici family, who commissioned numerous artworks made of Carrara marble.
