​Standing at an elevation of 307 metres above sea level it has a population of around 7,500 residents. Nearby places of interest include Castelseprio, Varese, Busto Arsizio and Lake Varese.

Castiglione Olona has a history that dates back to ancient times. It was once inhabited by Celtic tribes before coming under Roman rule. During the Middle Ages, the town flourished as an important center of art and culture under the patronage of Cardinal Branda Castiglioni, who transformed it into a cultural hub.

The most famous historical figure associated with Castiglione Olona is the Renaissance artist and architect, Masolino da Panicale, who painted frescoes in the town's Collegiata di San Vittore church.
