The most scenic towns of Lombardy are split into four categories starting with the largest section on Lakeside Towns of Lombardy which includes the dozens of towns on Lombardy's great lakes.
Among the highlights in that category are Sirmione on Lake Garda, Varenna on Lake Como and Laveno-Mombello on the Lombardy side of Lake Maggiore. The section on Lombardy's Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) includes 20 pretty villages and small towns. Among the best of those are San Benedetto Po, Bienno and Gromo. |
The best Mountain Towns of Lombardy is a collection of ten towns and villages in the mountainous northern reaches of the region. Among the most attractive here are the towns of Chiavenna, San Pellegrino Terme and nearby San Giovanni Bianco. Eleven towns form the Orange Flag Towns of Lombardy category; each town in that list has been approved by Touring Club Italiano due to their level of tourism facilities and overall appeal. They include Clusone, Torno and Gardone Riviera, the last of which is on the banks of Lake Garda.
Three more scenic towns don't quite fit into any of the above sub-categories but are some of the most attractive in Lombardy with each of Castiglione Olona, Trezzo sull'Adda and Montorfano offering its own unique charms.
