The finest castles of Emilia Romagna offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region. Throughout the medieval period when Italy was split into numerous duchies, republics and city states, the Emilia Romagna region was among the most hotly-contested areas on the peninsula and the castles were an essential part of the landscape as they kept friends in and enemies out.
Perhaps the most famous castle in Emilia Romagna is Castello Estense in Ferrara, named after the Este family which ruled the city for long periods. Among the pick of the remaining bunch are the Rocca Sforzesca in Imola, Grazzano Visconti and Torrechiara. |
