The bay of Chiaia di Luna is the most instantly recognisable sight on the island of Ponza. The dramatic, sheer cliff face that leads down into crystal clear water is a magnet for all visitors to Ponza and particularly those with a private boat.
The beach itself is closed for safety reasons but if you don't have a boat, you can at least photograph it from a little viewing area above, next to the main road. |
To reach the viewing area on foot takes around 15 minutes, a journey of just under a kilometre and mostly up hill. If you don't fancy the walk then I recommend hiring a scooter for the day and making this your first stop outside of the port. Then once you've finished here you can head north towards Le Forna where you'll find the majority of beaches and little coves.

Profile
Chiaia di Luna is a stunning natural cove located on the island of Ponza, which is part of the Pontine Islands in Italy. It is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, with towering white cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a pebble beach, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a picturesque escape.
The cove is a horseshoe-shaped bay, enclosed by high cliffs that rise vertically from the sea, reaching up to 100 meters in height. The cliffs are predominantly white and composed of volcanic tuff, creating a striking contrast with the vibrant blue waters below. The beach is made up of smooth pebbles and offers a relaxing spot for sunbathing and swimming.
The cove is accessible by sea or through a pedestrian tunnel carved into the cliffs. The entrance to the tunnel provides a magnificent view of the beach and the surrounding landscape.

History
Chiaia di Luna has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The name "Chiaia di Luna" translates to "Beach of the Moon," possibly derived from the crescent moon shape of the bay or the moon's reflection on the water.
The area was once used as a natural harbor by the Etruscans and later by the Romans. In Roman times, the cliffs were used to mine tuff for construction purposes, and some caves and tunnels along the cliffs were carved out during this period.
