​Situated in the Province of Rieti, Lake Turano covers an area of 5 square kilometres. The lake is 68 metres deep at its deepest point and stands at an elevation of 536 metres above sea level.

Places of interest nearby include the towns of Castel di Tora, Colle di Tora, Rieti and Greccio, while the recommended accommodation for Lake Turano is Le Sequoie​ in Carsoli.
Lake Turano didn't exist until 1939 when it was created artificially as a means to generate hydro electricity and also to protect the nearby Rieti Valley from the danger of flooding.

History
 Lake Turano is an artificial lake that was created in the mid-20th century. It was formed by the construction of a dam on the Turano River, which is a tributary of the Salto River.

The main purpose of creating the lake was to regulate the flow of water and to provide hydroelectric power to the surrounding areas. As a result of the dam construction, the Turano Valley was flooded, and the lake emerged as a beautiful body of water surrounded by the majestic mountains.
