​The town of Greccio is situated within the Province of Rieti and has a population of around 1,500 residents.

It stands at an elevation of 705 metres above sea level and is included in the list of Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy). Places of interest nearby include Rieti, Leonessa, Orte, Civita Castellana, Sutri and Orvinio.

Greccio is a charming hilltop village located in the province of Rieti, in the region of Lazio, Italy. This small medieval town is known for its historical and religious significance, as well as its picturesque setting amidst the Apennine mountains. Greccio is particularly famous for being the birthplace of the Nativity scene tradition, a significant event in Christian history. ​
History
Greccio's history can be traced back to ancient times, and the area has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. However, it gained notable importance in the 13th century due to a significant event associated with St. Francis of Assisi. In 1223, St. Francis chose Greccio as the location for a live Nativity scene (presepe vivente) to recreate the birth of Jesus Christ.

This became a pivotal moment in Christian tradition and is considered the origin of the modern Nativity scene that is now an essential part of Christmas celebrations worldwide.
