The name Milano Marittima can leave you scratching your head the first time you hear it and perhaps double-checking the map.
It's common practice for beach resorts in Italy to add words such as Lido, Marina or Marittima to distinguish them from the main town, but this beach resort is nowhere near Milan. That's because Milan is nowhere near a beach and in the landlocked region of Lombardy. |
Milano Marittima is around 25 kilometres south of Ravenna, which incidentally, has a seaside resort named Marina di Ravenna. The aim of the founders of Milano Marittima was to make it the "Milan of the Sea", an admirable ambition, but perhaps they should have left the naming of it to someone with a little more imagination; thus saving momentary confusion for tourists in years to come!
The name aside, it's a well-established, clean and orderly resort with a good shopping district, plenty of large hotels and a buzzing nightlife during the summer holiday season. It officially belongs to the Comune of Cervia which is just a couple of kilometres away and itself one of the most popular resorts on the Adriatic coast of Emilia Romagna, not Lombardy...
