​The town of Montalbano Elicona is situated in the Metropolitan City of Messina province and has a population of around 2,100.

It stands at an elevation of 920 metres above sea level and is included in the list of Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy). Places of interest nearby include Milazzo, Castroreale, Oliveri and the Sanctuary of Tindari. ​

Montalbano Elicona is a picturesque medieval town located in the province of Messina in Sicily, Italy. Situated on a hilltop at an altitude of about 900 meters, Montalbano Elicona offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Nebrodi Mountains and a rich historical heritage that takes visitors back in time.
History
The history of Montalbano Elicona dates back to ancient times when it was originally settled by the Sicels, an ancient indigenous population of Sicily. Later, it came under the influence of various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans.

The town's name, Montalbano, possibly derives from the Arabic term "Jabal al-bano," meaning "White Mountain," a reference to the white limestone cliffs surrounding the area.

During the medieval period, Montalbano Elicona became an important fortified town with a strategic position in the defense of the region. Its well-preserved historical center and imposing castle reflect its significance in the past.
