History
Montefiascone has ancient origins, dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. It was an important settlement during the Middle Ages, known for its strategic position along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route connecting northern Europe to Rome.
The town's name is believed to have been derived from the Latin words "Mons" (mountain) and "Faliscorum" (referring to the ancient Falisci people who inhabited the area).
During the medieval period, Montefiascone became part of the Papal States and was fortified with walls and towers. It also gained religious importance when the Cathedral of Santa Margherita was built to honor Saint Margaret of Antioch, a patron saint of the town.
