Piazza dei Martiri (Carpi)
The Piazza dei Martiri in Carpi is one of the largest squares in Italy, belying the status of a humble provincial town in Emilia Romagna.
One of the most impressive open spaces in the country, it's lined along one side by a covered arcade walkway concealing a number of bars, shops and restaurants. Facing the arcade are the gigantic Palazzo del Pio which stands next to the Teatro Comunale.
The bright orange hue of the Theatre's facade shares some similarities with that of the distinctive Carpi Cathedral which occupies the top end of the Piazza. The Cathedral underwent a successful renovation after it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 2012.
