The Piazza dei Martiri in Carpi is one of the largest squares in Italy, belying the status of a humble provincial town in Emilia Romagna.
One of the most impressive open spaces in the country, it's lined along one side by a covered arcade walkway concealing a number of bars, shops and restaurants. Facing the arcade are the gigantic Palazzo del Pio which stands next to the Teatro Comunale. |
The bright orange hue of the Theatre's facade shares some similarities with that of the distinctive Carpi Cathedral which occupies the top end of the Piazza. The Cathedral underwent a successful renovation after it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 2012.
