The Piazza del Popolo is one of the most important squares in Rome city centre. It stands at the northern end of the famous shopping street Via del Corso which runs south to Piazza Venezia.
You can get some great views down on to Piazza del Popolo from a balcony area of the Pincio Promenade, a section of the adjacent Villa Borghese park. |

Monuments on the Piazza
At the centre of the Piazza is the 24 metre high Flaminio Obelisk which takes pride of place. From the southern portion of the square, three roads, including the Corso, stretch south into the centro storico, Rome's historic centre. At the intersection of the Piazza del Popolo and the Corso, two churches stand side by side: the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli and the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Montesanto.
The Porta del Popolo
Standing guard at the northern entrance to the square is the Porta del Popolo (also known as the Porta Flaminia) which was built in 1475 and once formed part of the Aurelian Walls defensive system around the city.
The city gate is joined on one side to another church: the Basilica Santa Maria del Popolo. In this same area there's also a museum dedicated to the work of Leonardo da Vinci.
Leaving the square through the Porta del Popolo you shortly reach the Flaminio Metro station which is on Line A. From here it's just three short stops to Rome Termini Train Station.
