Piazza delle Erbe (Mantova)

The Piazza delle Erbe in Mantova is one of a number of squares in Italy that share the same name; it has an equivalent in both Verona and Padua. South west of those two cities and across the border in the Lombardy region, Mantua is a beautiful medieval city.
Along one side of the Piazza is a porticoed walkway of bars and restaurants which faces across to the Palazzo della Ragione. |

Just to the left of the expansive Palazzo is an unusual 11th century circular church called the Rotonda di San Lorenzo which contains a number of frescoes. The Piazza, which becomes a market place once a week on a Thursday, is just a few steps from the Basilica di Sant'Andrea whose towering dome provides one of the most iconic images of the square and of Mantova itself.
