History
The history of the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica spans various periods, reflecting its long and continuous use as a burial ground.
During the Bronze Age and Iron Age, from the 13th to the 7th centuries BC, the site was used by the indigenous Sicilian population, the Sicels, as a necropolis. They carved the rock-cut chamber tombs into the cliffs, creating thousands of burial places for their deceased.
Later, during the Greek and Roman periods, Pantalica continued to be used as a burial site, further expanding the number of tombs in the area.
Over time, the site was abandoned, and its significance was forgotten until the late 19th century when it was rediscovered and became subject to archaeological investigations.
