Tolmezzo is a mountain town in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, located in the Carnia area at the confluence of the But and Tagliamento rivers. As the historic and cultural centre of Carnia, it has long been an important meeting point for trade and traditions in the Alpine valleys. Surrounded by rugged mountain landscapes, it offers a blend of history, local craftsmanship, and access to outdoor activities.  

At the heart of Tolmezzo is the Duomo di San Martino, an elegant church with a richly decorated interior that reflects the town’s religious heritage. The Museo Carnico delle Arti Popolari, housed in a historic palace, showcases traditional crafts, textiles, and rural life, preserving the region’s deep-rooted cultural identity. The town’s streets feature a mix of alpine and Venetian-style architecture, with small squares and arcades that add to its charm. Tolmezzo also serves as a hub for exploring the surrounding mountains, making it a key destination for hikers and nature lovers.  

To the north, the alpine village of Sutrio provides a gateway to the Zoncolan ski area, one of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s most renowned winter sports destinations. Further west, the Sauris Valley is famous for its traditional smoked ham and wooden chalets, reflecting a unique blend of cultural influences. A short drive south leads to Venzone, a beautifully restored medieval town with impressive stone walls. With its position in the heart of Carnia, Tolmezzo combines history, mountain traditions, and easy access to some of the region’s most stunning natural areas.
