The Torre di Federico II in Enna is an octagonal tower that reaches to a height of 27 metres. It's one of the best vantage points from which to enjoy views of the hill town of Enna in Sicily.
There are two theories as to its origin: the theory from which it takes its name is that it was commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II some time in the 13th century. |
Part of the basis of that theory comes from the unusual octagonal shape of the tower which bears some similarities with the famous Castel del Monte in Puglia which was commissioned by Frederick II in the 13th century. The second theory is that it was built as an observatory some 200 years earlier in the 11th century, but proof of either hypothesis is either weak or incomplete.
