Venzone Baptistery
Latest update: 26 February 2022
The Venzone Baptistery is a unique structure that originally dates back to the 13th century.
Situated in the borgo of Venzone in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 but later rebuilt using the same materials and design. The small circular Baptistery has a crypt within which are housed the famous Mummies of Venzone. Originally discovered in the 17th century, the Mummies once numbered around 40 but after the 1976 earthquake they were reduced to just 15. Scientists are yet to fully understand their origin despite several studies. |
