History
The history of Giardini Naxos dates back to ancient times when it was originally settled by the Sicels, an ancient indigenous population of Sicily. In 734 BC, it was colonized by Greek settlers from Naxos in Greece, becoming one of the earliest Greek colonies in Sicily. The town was named "Naxos" after the Greek island from which the settlers came.
During the Greek and later Roman periods, Naxos flourished as an important trading and cultural centre. It was a prosperous town known for its agricultural activities, pottery, and its strategic position along ancient trade routes.
