The town of Leonessa is situated within the Province of Rieti and stands at an elevation of 969 metres above sea level. It has a population of around 2,000 inhabitants.

Places of interest nearby include Rieti, Greccio, Orte, Civita Castellana, Sutri and Orvinio while the recommended accommodation is the Convento San Bernardino​ in Montefranco.
Leonessa is included in the list of Bandiera Arancione (Orange Flag) towns, an award given by the Touring Club Italia to towns that meet certain criteria in terms of tourism. ​

Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in the Serra di Leonessa mountains, the town offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and is known for its well-preserved medieval character. ​
History
Leonessa has ancient origins and has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. The town's history is closely linked to the nearby Rieti Valley, and it was once a strategic outpost during the Middle Ages.
