The city of Macerata is the capital city of the Province of Macerata with a population of 41,514 inhabitants.
Standing at an elevation of 315 metres above sea level, it covers a total area of 93 km² and lies 55 kilometres south of Ancona, the regional capital of Marche. The main attraction of Macerata is the Sferisterio: a unique, open-air theatre and opera venue, the second largest of its kind in Italy, second only to the Verona Arena. |
The Sferisterio is situated on Piazza Mazzini, one of two beautiful squares in the city. Piazza Mazzini is the first square you come to if you enter Macerata from the main gate on Piazza Nazario Sauro. A 5 minute walk from there up the steps towards the city centre eventually brings you to Piazza della Libertà. This is the cultural hub of the city where you'll find the majority of shops, bars and restaurants.
One of the principal sights of the city, the Loggia dei Mercanti sits on one corner of Piazza della Libertà while a 5 minute walk from there along either of the two parallel shopping streets of Corso della Repubblica or Via Antonio Gramsci, brings you to Palazzo Ricci where examples of Italian 20th century art are on display.
