The Sferisterio is situated on Piazza Mazzini, one of two beautiful squares in the city. Piazza Mazzini is the first square you come to if you enter Macerata from the main gate on Piazza Nazario Sauro. A 5 minute walk from there up the steps towards the city centre eventually brings you to Piazza della Libertà. This is the cultural hub of the city where you'll find the majority of shops, bars and restaurants.
One of the principal sights of the city, the Loggia dei Mercanti sits on one corner of Piazza della Libertà while a 5 minute walk from there along either of the two parallel shopping streets of Corso della Repubblica or Via Antonio Gramsci, brings you to Palazzo Ricci where examples of Italian 20th century art are on display.
You can easily make your way around the city centre on foot but there are buses in operation if you want to visit some of the smaller towns in the immediate area. Macerata's train station is located just over a kilometre from Piazza della Libertà, a walk of around 12 minutes. From there you can take a train to Civitanova Marche on the coast, a journey of half an hour with 4 stops along the way.
The most convenient airport for Macerata is Marche Airport close to Ancona, a drive of 52 minutes and 77 kilometres. Slightly further away in the opposite direction is Pescara Abruzzo Airport, 143 kilometres away and a journey of an hour and 40 minutes by car.
