The town of Maiori offers something slightly different from the typical image of an Amalfi Coast setting.
Maiori is an official comune with a population of around 5,500, situated within the Salerno Province in the region of Campania. Its huge seafront and beach have marked it our as a popular tourist destination, even as far back as Roman times. |
However, whereas many towns and villages in the region hug a craggy cliff at impossible angles or are hidden in curious bays and coves, Maiori is a lot more straightforward with a very modern feel to it. Victim of a devastating flood in 1952 the town was largely destroyed and had to be rebuilt from scratch which explains why many of the buildings are from contemporary times.
This is a great place for people looking for a relaxing beach holiday, the beach is huge, the largest on the Amalfi Coast and there are dozens of hotels with a range of prices to suit most pockets. There's also a very healthy nightlife and plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to amuse its visitors along with an attractive marina at the western end of the town, full of pretty yachts and fishing vessels.
Maiori is located just a short distance east of Minori, the two towns separated by a headland. You can most easily reach Maiori by bus or by car as it's situated along the main Amalfi Coast Road.
