Natural Sights of Marche
Among the collection of natural sights of Marche, the most famous is without a doubt the Frasassi Caves. The cave complex takes you into a world that seems completely alien to that outside.
The caves were discovered in the early 70's and are now a firm fixture on Marche's touristic landscape. A large visitor car park is dedicated to the cave system which lies close to a number of interesting sights such as the Santuario di Madonna di Frasassi, the Abbazia di San Vittore alla Chiuse and the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi. This area is a must for any serious exploration of the Marche region and can require an overnight stay to see everything.
Away from the sights around the Frasassi Caves, Mercatale Lake is one of the most scenic spots when viewed above from the historic town of Sassocorvaro. The green-tinged water of San Ruffino Lake is another attractive area, while Monte Carpegna on the regional border with Emilia Romagna is a favourite location for activities such as hiking and cycling.
