Among the collection of natural sights of Marche, the most famous is without a doubt the Frasassi Caves. The cave complex takes you into a world that seems completely alien to that outside.
The caves were discovered in the early 70's and are now a firm fixture on Marche's touristic landscape. A large visitor car park is dedicated to the cave system which lies close to a number of interesting sights such as the Santuario di Madonna di Frasassi, the Abbazia di San Vittore alla Chiuse and the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi. This area is a must for any serious exploration of the Marche region and can require an overnight stay to see everything. |
Away from the sights around the Frasassi Caves, Mercatale Lake is one of the most scenic spots when viewed above from the historic town of Sassocorvaro. The green-tinged water of San Ruffino Lake is another attractive area, while Monte Carpegna on the regional border with Emilia Romagna is a favourite location for activities such as hiking and cycling.
