Bacoli is a coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, set on the Phlegraean Peninsula overlooking the Bay of Naples. Nestled between the Lago Miseno and Lago Fusaro, it occupies a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, where lakes, gentle hills, and coastal views define the scenery. The town’s setting within the Campi Flegrei area gives it a mix of natural and historical character, with traces of ancient civilisation visible throughout its surroundings.
The area was once part of the Roman resort zone of Baiae, renowned for its luxurious villas and thermal baths used by the imperial elite. Among the most remarkable remains are the Piscina Mirabilis, an immense underground cistern, and the Baia Castle, now home to an archaeological museum. Bacoli also preserves strong maritime traditions, with fishing and seafood cuisine central to local life. Its proximity to Pozzuoli, Cuma, and Monte di Procida places it within one of Italy’s most fascinating coastal and archaeological landscapes.

- Parco Archeologico di Baia includes the submerged ruins of the ancient Roman resort town of Baiae, part of which lies beneath the sea due to volcanic activity. Above ground, the park contains well-preserved remains such as the Temple of Diana and Temple of Mercury, once used as bathing complexes. Guided tours and underwater excursions reveal the grandeur of the original structures.
- Piscina Mirabilis is one of the largest Roman cisterns ever built, located in the Bacoli suburb of Miseno. Carved into the rock and supported by a grid of stone columns, the cistern was used to store water for the Roman fleet stationed at the nearby port. Its scale and symmetry make it a remarkable example of Roman engineering.
- Castello di Baia overlooks the sea from a headland and houses the Museo Archeologico dei Campi Flegrei. The castle offers wide views across the Gulf of Naples and contains archaeological finds from across the Phlegraean Fields, including statues, inscriptions, and everyday objects from Roman settlements in the region.
- Lago Fusaro and Casina Vanvitelliana form a tranquil area just west of Bacoli, where a small baroque-style hunting lodge sits on an island connected by a wooden bridge. The building was designed in the 18th century for the Bourbon kings and is surrounded by walking paths, wetlands, and viewpoints.
- Lungolago and Beaches of Bacoli stretch along the Tyrrhenian coast, with sandy beaches and rocky inlets offering opportunities for swimming and water sports. The waterfront area includes promenades, beach clubs, and small harbours, linking Bacoli with nearby coastal towns such as Baia and Miseno.
