Miseno is a coastal district of Bacoli, located on the Phlegraean Peninsula overlooking the Bay of Naples. Set between the Lago Miseno and the open sea, it occupies a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, with gentle hills and calm waters forming a natural harbour. The area’s coastal position and mild climate have made it a favoured spot since antiquity, combining scenic beauty with deep historical significance.

In Roman times, Miseno served as the base of the Classis Misenensis, the imperial fleet of the western Mediterranean. Remains from this era include the vast Piscina Mirabilis, a monumental underground cistern that once supplied water to the fleet, and other archaeological traces scattered around the bay. Today, Miseno is known for its beaches, small marina, and views across the gulf towards Capo Miseno. Its proximity to Baiae, Pozzuoli, and Cuma places it within the heart of the Campi Flegrei, one of Italy’s most historically and geologically rich coastal regions.

  • Spiaggia di Miseno is a long, sandy beach facing the Bay of Naples, popular for its calm waters and wide shoreline. The beach includes both free sections and well-managed lidos offering sunbeds, umbrellas, and seasonal beach bars. It is particularly busy in summer with families and day trippers.
  • Capo Miseno and Lighthouse mark the westernmost point of the Phlegraean Peninsula, with panoramic views over the sea and islands. A walking path leads to the lighthouse, passing cliffs and low scrubland. The headland was a key point in Roman naval defence and retains signs of ancient military use.
  • Lago Miseno is a coastal lagoon once used as a Roman naval harbour. It is now a calm, enclosed body of water bordered by homes and paths, with small boats moored along its edge. The lake is linked to the sea by a narrow channel and remains an important local landmark.
  • Roman Cisterns and Archaeological Remains are scattered throughout the Miseno area, including parts of ancient aqueducts and vaulted cisterns used to supply water to the Roman fleet. Some remains can be seen integrated into modern structures or along footpaths near the lake and headland.

How to Get to Miseno
By Rail: Miseno does not have its own train station. The nearest station is in Fusaro, around 5 kilometres away, served by regional trains operated by Trenitalia. From Naples, journey times are approximately 50 minutes. Buses and taxis are available from Fusaro to reach Miseno.

By Road: Miseno lies about 30 kilometres west of Naples and can be reached in roughly 45 minutes by car via the Tangenziale di Napoli (A56) and local coastal roads. Limited parking is available near the beach, particularly around Via Miliscola.

  • Naples International Airport: Located about 35 kilometres away, with a driving time of 45 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. The airport offers regular flights throughout Europe and connections to major Italian cities.
  • Rome Ciampino Airport: Approximately 215 kilometres north (around 2 hours and 30 minutes by car), mostly served by low-cost carriers.
  • Rome Fiumicino Airport: Around 235 kilometres north (about 2 hours and 45 minutes by car), offering a wide range of international and intercontinental flights.
