The list of Basilicata's Borghi Più Belli d'Italia comprises a mixture of spectacular scenery and intriguing historic centres.
Translating into English as "Italy's Most Beautiful Villages", the list for the whole country is made up of around 300 locations, seven of which are in Basilicata. Often appearing on magazine covers or television adverts, Pietrapertosa is one of the archetypal Italian borghi. In an area of exceptional rugged beauty, it faces another of the villages on the list, Castelmezzano, whose appearance is equally dramatic. |
Viggianello is another village perched on the edge of a rock and its colourful buildings helped to earn its place on the list. Both Irsina and Venosa are steeped in history, the latter particularly so with its castle, while the villages of Acerenza and Guardia Perticara offer their own unique charms and are more than worthy of a visit.
