Perhaps just a little bit more than any of the other nineteen regions of Italy, it's the beaches of Sardinia that really do characterise it best. They're also the main attraction of the millions of visitors who come to the island region's shores every year and it's rare that those visitors leave with anything but feelings of satisfaction.
There are in the region of 200 beaches in Sardinia and the best of those really can consider themselves the cream rising to the top. Every Sardinian has his opinion on which beach is the best on the island and here we can have a look at some of the main contenders. |

La Pelosa Beach at the north-western tip of Sardinia makes a petty compelling case to be considered the best: its shallow waters create the brightest colours of blue and it has that little extra something with the small watchtower adding to its aesthetic allure. Any of the four beaches of Chia could rightfully press their own claims, while the Orosei Gulf has a surfeit of contenders within its tight environs.
Cala Goloritzé is tricky to reach on foot so requires either a boat excursion or some time on your hands. It's worth all the trouble when you get there though and perhaps has the slight edge over neighbouring Cala Mariolu and Cala Luna which are both stunning in their own way.
One of Sardinia's best seaside towns naturally has one of Sardinia's best beaches: Santa Teresa Gallura at the north-eastern corner of region looks across the Boniface Strait to Corsica but the eyes don't tend to reach that far with the mesmerising Rena Bianca in the foreground. A short distance to the east of Santa Teresa lies the Maddalena Archipelago island group and it's here that we find the tiny island of Spargi with its Cala Corsara Beach just about as good as any of the others mentioned above.
Nobody will ever be able to answer the question of which is the best of Sardinia's 200 beaches but whomever tries to do so will have a lot of fun visiting them all!
