Bionaz is a mountain commune in the Aosta Valley, located in the upper Valpelline north of Aosta. Set at around 1,600 metres above sea level, it lies along the Buthier River, surrounded by pastures, larch forests and peaks belonging to the Pennine Alps. The settlement is composed of several small hamlets scattered along the valley, each with traditional stone houses and alpine farm buildings that reflect the area’s pastoral heritage.
The Place Moulin Dam, one of the highest in Europe, forms a large artificial lake near the head of the valley and is a key landmark of Bionaz. By Rail: Bionaz does not have its own railway station. The nearest station is in Aosta, about 25 kilometres away, on the Aosta–Ivrea line operated by Trenitalia. Regional trains connect Aosta to Ivrea in around 1 hour and to Turin in approximately 2 hours. From Aosta, Bionaz can be reached by car, taxi, or local bus along the SR28 road that runs through the Valpelline valley.
