Cassino
Latest update: 23 February 2022
The historic town of Cassino is situated within the Province of Frosinone and has a population of around 36,000 residents.
Cassino was an important theatre of operations during World War Two, from January to May 1944 when the Allies and Germans fought out the Battle of Montecassino. The modern town which stands 40 metres above sea level was largely flattened as a consequence of the battle, and it retains little in the way of historic charm. However, Montecassino Abbey which overlooks Cassino from its hilltop perch is one of the most fascinating places to discover in the whole Lazio region. |
