The term Ciociaria relates to the geographical area of the province of Frosinone in the Lazio region. Originally used as a derogatory term to insult peasants, it later became synonymous with the poorest areas to the south-east of Rome.
When the Italian Fascist government took power in the1920's and formed the Frosinone Province, the word Ciociaria became more widely used to designate the geographical area as it is today. Characterised by a landscape of rolling hills, rivers, valleys and historic hilltop towns, it's a fascinating area to explore. |
Ciociaria covers the area from the spa town of Fiuggi in its north-west corner, down to Cassino in the opposite, south-east corner. Its northern border edges the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, while to the south, it doesn't quite reach the Tyrrhenian Coast.
