The historic towns of Lazio listed below stand apart from the region's major cities such as Rome or smaller Viterbo, but each one has a fascinating take to tell, dating back hundreds and even thousands of years in some cases.
Topping the list is the Etruscan town of Tuscania which is full of historic buildings from a variety of periods. Tarquinia is another that stems from the time of the Etruscans and is the home to one of the country's most important archaeological sites: the Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia. |
Anagni meanwhile owes the majority of its fame to the period where it was the home of the Pope and its Cathedral is still one of the most beautiful in Italy. Tivoli is home to two quite different UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Villa d'Este is perhaps the most famous garden in Italy, while just a short distance outside the town are the Roman ruins of Villa Adriana: the former home of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.
Compared to the other towns on the list, the journey back in time to when Cassino shot to fame is relatively short. The town itself offers very little in terms of historical architecture and that's because it was one of the most important theatres of operation in World War Two, bitterly disputed between the opposing forces. The town's Montecassino Abbey contains a museum that details the struggle and the nearby Polish cemetery provides a graphic and poignant reminder of what took place there.
