The Gradara Castle dominates the landscape of the medieval town from which it takes its name. Enclosing Gradara on all sides are an impressive set of turreted walls that are almost entirely intact.

The castle itself sits in an elevated position overlooking the rest of the town and was originally built in the twelfth century. It boasts fascinating internal areas and amazing views from its ramparts.

History
Gradara Castle has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, with evidence of human settlement in the area since the Bronze Age. The current castle was built in the 12th century by the De Grifo family, who later sold it to the Malatesta family. The Malatesta rulers expanded and fortified the castle, making it a formidable defensive stronghold during the Middle Ages.

The castle witnessed several battles and political intrigues, including the love story of Paolo and Francesca, which was immortalized by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy. Gradara Castle continued to be a significant military and political center until the 16th century when it gradually lost its strategic importance.
