In a region famous most of all for its seaside resorts, it can come as something of a surprise to learn of the many hill towns of Calabria.

So numerous are they that to visit them all you really need to live in the region and have plenty of time on your hands; assuming most of you don't fit into those categories, this is a collection of the best of the bunch with a good variety of landscapes to enjoy.

One of the quirkiest and most interesting places in Calabria is the village of Pentedattilo: abandoned many years, it's now a ghost town whose jagged peaks dutifully provide its sense of eeriness.
