The scenic locations of Calabria are divided into four main groups which showcase different aspects of the region's sights.
Calabria is best known as a seaside location and its beaches, seaside towns and beach resorts are all detailed in the Calabria by the Sea section. Among those coastal resorts are the favourites such as Tropea, Pizzo, Scilla and Le Castella to name just a handful. Less obvious from the outside is what can be found among Calabria's hinterland; this is an area where the region really doesn't disappoint and we have three separate categories to detail that. |
I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia is an association which promotes the smaller villages in Italy which are known as borghi. Of the 300 or so borghi that have made the list across the whole country, Calabria has fourteen. Each one is quite wonderful and they provide a range of interesting landscapes; highlights among them include Morano Calabro, Buonvicino and Altomonte.

Many of those borghi are what you would class as hill towns and there are dozens of those in Calabria that haven't made the list of Borghi Più Belli, at least not yet. This really is quite an exceptional collection and is headed by the famous ghost town called Pentedattilo which is completely abandoned and one of the eeriest places in the region you can visit. It tops a list that also includes the pretty Belvedere Marittimo and the curious Palizzi which is dominated by a huge rock.
The final category of scenic locations is the Orange Flag Towns of Calabria. Sharing some similarities with the Borghi Più Belli association, this list is nevertheless slightly different with the towns who have been awarded the Bandiera Arancione by Touring Club Italiano sometimes slightly larger. That said, there are towns that have made both lists and among the best in this collection we find Taverna, Oriolo with its medieval fortress and the village of Bova where you somehow find an antique train waiting for you at the top of a steep road!
