The collection of Calabria's Borghi Più Belli d'Italia currently stands at fourteen of some of the region's most beautiful locations.
Across the country there are around 300 villages and smaller towns that have qualified for the award which is governed by the association of the same name. An Italian borgo is a village or an area of housing in a larger town that has historic foundations. These towns and villages with their close-knit communities play a vital role in maintaining local traditions and offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, even in modern times. |
Some of Calabria's most famous hill towns are included on the list with the likes of Santa Severina, Altomonte and Oriolo just a selection of the better-known names. There are lots of hidden gems as well such as the borgo of Chianalea which might otherwise go unnoticed as it's situated in an area of the seaside town of Scilla. Some of the borghi are in simply dramatic locations such as Buonvicino, Bova or Aieta.
Each of the 20 Italian regions has a number of entries on the Borghi Più Belli list but Calabria's collection stands comparison with them all.
