The delightful medieval town of Iglesias is one of the highlights of the south western section of Sardinia.
The main sights are the Santa Chiara Cathedral which sits on Piazza Municipio in the town centre and Salvaterra Castle. The castle dates back to the 13th century and along with it, much of the city's original defensive wall is still in place. |
The town centre is full of charm and colour with its brightly-painted buildings. There are also lots of shops, restaurants and cafes where you can watch the world go by.
Iglesias has a population of more than 26,000 people and until 2016 it was the joint capital of the now defunct Carbonia-Iglesias Province; with the reworking of Sardinia's provinces, Iglesias became part of South Sardinia Province of which the capital is the nearby town of Carbonia. If you approach the town by car you'll find lots of evidence of its mining history and there's a further reminder of this in the town centre's Mining Art Museum.

Profile
Iglesias is a charming town located in the southwestern part of Sardinia, Italy. Nestled in the Sulcis region, Iglesias is surrounded by picturesque landscapes, historic mining sites, and beautiful beaches, making it a fascinating destination for travelers seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
History
The history of Iglesias dates back to the Middle Ages when it was founded in the 13th century by the Pisan Republic. The town's name is derived from the Latin "Ecclesiae," meaning "Churches," as it was known for its numerous churches and religious buildings. Throughout its history, Iglesias experienced various rulers, including the Aragonese and the Spanish.
The town's growth and prosperity were closely tied to its mining industry, particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries. The surrounding region was rich in minerals, and mining activities played a crucial role in the economy of the area. Today, the mining heritage of Iglesias is preserved in the form of historic mines and mining museums.

Iglesias Travel
The train station in Iglesias (Iglesias Stazione) is a 10 minute walk from Piazza Municipio. From here you can take the train to Cagliari with a journey time of 53 minutes, or to Cagliari Elmas Airport which is 53 minutes away. Alternatively, the same airport can be reached faster by car with a journey time of 37 minutes.
Bus isn't the most convenient way to travel to the capital from Iglesias but you can take a bus ride to Carbonia which takes around three quarters of an hour.
Places of interest nearby include the Tempio di Antas, the beautiful beach of Cala Domestica and the mining town of Buggerru (the child in me laughs every time I see the name!), which also has its own beach.
