During the medieval era, Imperia became a strategic maritime city and was an important center for trade and commerce in the region. The town's historic center, Porto Maurizio, and Oneglia, were established as two distinct settlements on opposite sides of the Impero River.
In 1923, the two towns of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia were merged to form the present-day city of Imperia, as we know it today.
