The major cities and towns of Liguria start with the regional capital of Genoa which is situated at a midway point between the two coastal areas either side of it.
Stretching out to the west of Genoa is the Riviera di Ponente with the first provincial capital in that direction being the city of Savona, while continuing in the same direction towards the French border eventually brings you to another city: Imperia. The coastal area to the east of Genoa is called the Riviera di Levante with the major city there being the port of La Spezia. |
Aside from the four provincial capitals mentioned above, Liguria is blessed with a great number of large towns along its coastline. One of the most celebrated is the town of Sanremo which is one of the places where tourism in Italy first developed to the levels of today.
Other large seaside resorts include Rapallo and Chiavari, while the town of Albenga is quite unique; it does have a beach area but the most interesting part of the town is a few kilometres inland within a medieval wall containing historical monuments. Another town just dripping with historical charm is Sarzana, close to the border with Tuscany, while Ventimiglia is the last big town you reach on the way to France, or indeed, the first town you reach in Italy if you drive from France along the French Riviera.
