The Comune of Isola del Liri is situated within the pretty Ciociaria region of Lazio. The area is characterised by historic towns on hillsides but Isola del Liri showcases a different aspect of the area's character. As the town's name suggests, it's actually an island.
Surrounded on all sides by the River Liri, the centrepiece of the town is a magnificent waterfall flowing down from a castle. |
The waterfall flows into a pond which is overlooked by a pathway at the edge of the centro storico. The small town centre is populated with some historic churches and other buildings, with a good selection of restaurants. The main sight however is the waterfall which you can get a closer look at by walking through the less attractive modern building on the eastern side of the pond.
Aside from a pretty piazza at the corner of the pond, the nicest part of the town lies on the small central island area with its colourful buildings set against the backdrop of the water providing the most pleasing sights. The Castello Boncompagni Viscogliosi dates back to the early eleventh century and is these days used for weddings and other events.
