The most scenic towns of Lazio have been arranged into different categories in order to showcase as many as possible. And there are many! The section that provides the highest number of entrants is the Hill Towns of Lazio page: here we find the almost mystical Calcata and the larger Sermoneta which oozes historic charm.
Knowing full well that many of these towns could just as easily fall into multiple categories, we find the Historic Towns of Lazio which includes Anagni, Tuscania and Tivoli among others. Some of the towns from that list also belong under the Tuscia - Etruscan Towns of Lazio which can mainly be found within the Viterbo Province. |
Within the Lakeside Towns of Lazio section we find a delightful selection of resorts that sit next to the main lakes of Lazio such as Lake Bracciano, Lake Bolsena and Lake Turano. Arguably the prettiest of these towns is Trevignano Romano which is just a short distance across Lake Bracciano from another favourite: Anguillara Sabazia.

The Castelli Romani or Roman Castles, is a group of around 15 towns situated to the south of Rome, occupying the bucolic Alban Hills. An area of natural beauty where lakes are interspersed with historic hill towns that overlook them, includes Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope no less and one of Italy's most beautiful gardens. Within the same area is the famous vineyard town of Frascati while lesser-known treats include little Nemi which looks down on to the lake of the same name.
Perhaps raising an eyebrow or two is the sixth category in this section: the Orange Flag Towns of Lazio. These towns have all been awarded the Bandiera Arancione, a mark of excellence bestowed upon places of beauty by the Touring Club Italiano. The pretty village of San Donato Val di Comino which sits at the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park is included in this category along with historic towns such as Bassiano and Leonessa.
In a similar way to the aforementioned sub-regions of Tuscia and Castelli Romani, we come to the area known as Ciociaria. For many years the word was no more than a derogatory term used to insult the poor. In later years however, it came to specifically be associated with the province of Frosinone. Marked by a series of valleys, rivers and historic hill towns overlooked by the Apennine Mountains, Ciociaria is a wonderful area, full of charm and surprises. Two of the most picturesque towns in the region are Isola del Liri and Arpino which are separated by just a few kilometres but could hardly be more different.
