Italy Green Pass

The Italy Green Pass was an extension of the European Union's Digital Covid Certificate which was designed to be a simple and effective tool to be used in the fight against the Coronavirus Pandemic. As of 1 May 2022, the requirement to show the Green Pass was removed.
Previous Green Pass Rules
From 6 August 2021 to 1 May 2022, the Italy Green Pass or the slightly less snappy "Certificazione Verde Covid 19" was required to allow access to certain environments such as visitor attractions and public indoor spaces including restaurants.
The Green Pass featured a QR Code which can be scanned at the entrance of a relevant venue. It was available in either digital format on Smartphones or as a printed document.
It showed at least one of the following:
The idea behind the scheme was to ensure that when people are gathering in close proximity, they could feel safe and reassured that the people they were sharing the space with were not currently infected with Covid 19.
Either a PCR Test or a Rapid Antigen/Lateral Flow Test was valid for proof of negative Covid status.

- Proof of recovery from Covid in the previous six months

If sitting at an outdoor table of a restaurant, the Green Pass wasn't necessary and the same applies to having a drink at the bar of a cafe.
- To eat indoors at a restaurant
- Entry to an outdoor event (musical, sporting or otherwise)
- Entry to a museum, swimming pool, theatre, cinema, spa complex or gym

Frequently Asked Questions about the Italy Green Pass
Does the Italy Green Pass apply to foreign visitors to Italy?
No, the Italian Green Pass or Certificazione Verde is only for use by Italian nationals.
What system or documents will be in use for foreign visitors to Italy where the Green Pass is required?
In situations where the Italy Green Pass is required, other nationalities are able to use their equivalent documentation or digital system.
On 29th July 2021, the Italian Government confirmed that documents issued by health authorities in the following five countries will be valid for use in Italy in situations where the Green Pass is requested:
Digital and paper forms of proof are both accepted as long as they are issued from the relevant health authority of that country.
EU citizens can for example use the EU Digital Covid Certificate and UK citizens can use the NHS Covid Pass. For other nationalities, documents such as the American CDC Card (Centre for Disease Control) used to enter Italy are valid.
We can already see from the example below, that there is a degree of flexibility on what can be used to prove one's Covid status.

It's worth noting here, the mention of the phrases "equivalent certificate" and "digital or paper format". For any non-EU visitors that don't have either the Italy Green Pass or the EU Digital COVID Certificate, you can use the same evidence of your Covid status that you used to enter the country.
